Acubriefs Newsletter Volume 2 Issue 5
May 2001
Editor's Note:
This edition of ACUBRIEFS reviews several articles that highlight
many pertinent methodological issues in acupuncture research. My
favorite question regarding acupuncture research is: what constitutes
acupuncture? We are a long way from coming to a consensus on the
definition of acupuncture. We can define it in a very specific,
procedural way as is often done for research purposes. However,
this resembles giving antibiotics to patients and being very specific
about dosage, duration, etc., but never being clear about the appropriate
context for the antibiotic.
What good is such research? How helpful is research that is based
on mechanistic paradigms and only seriously addresses probabilities
with regard to populations? How objective is this approach when
dealing with an intervention that, by its nature and theory, is
highly contextual and requires individualized therapy?
There is so much at stake when it comes to establishing effectiveness
and appropriate therapy that I think it is moot to question whether
there is a role for standard research in evaluating acupuncture.
I am hoping that this newsletter will not only continue to familiarize
the reader with current acupuncture research, but also help the
reader appreciate the limitations of what can be objectively drawn
from the research.
