Acubriefs Newsletter Volume 4 Issue 7
July 2003
Editor's Note:
Below are comments by Steven Birch PhD, LAc on a review I did in
last month's Acubriefs Newsletter. Where my review was positive
his is clearly critical. Normally, comments on reviews will be posted
online at the site of the review. In special cases, such as this
I will choose to publish the comments here in the newsletter. Dr.
Birch is passionate about improving the quality of research in acupuncture
and his comments outline many important issues related to performing
and reporting acupuncture research. I will admit, as a physician
who regularly provides acupuncture, I probably am biased toward
being a little bit more critical of research that finds acupuncture
ineffective than acupuncture studies that show a positive effect.
Having admitted to this probable bias, as my reviews reflect, I
am a strong proponent of studies with designs that initially demonstrate
effectiveness rather than efficacy. In our attempts to first establish
efficacy of acupuncture, I would argue much of the research in acupuncture
has little relevancy.
Controversies in acupuncture research need to be openly discussed.
Through Acubriefs's reviews and the invitiation for comments on
them I hope Acubriefs will help meet this goal.
Two questions have come up for which we request some input from
our readers. First, do the value of the reviews and or comments
lose significance because they don't provide references? Secondly,
if you know that your e-mail newsletters must come to you in text
rather than html format would you let us know? Contact peggy@acubriefs.com
with your responses.
Thank you.

Acubriefs Newsletter has three objectives:
1. To provide a centralized resource for reviewing new citations
on acupuncture in English.
2. To provide annotated abstracts on citations of particular interest
to clinicians and researchers.
3. To facilitate access to citations quoted/reviewed. (Please let
us know if you have suggestions on how we might better meet these
objectives)
Reviewers for articles are either members of the MARF board or experts
chosen by the board to review articles for particular medical subjects.
Sources for citations are the same as the Medical Acupuncture Research
Foundation's (MARF) online bibliography of acupuncture at Acubriefs.com
. The editor for the newsletter is J.K. Rotchford MD, MPH, Past
President of the
Medical Acupuncture Research Foundation.
